The OLED Nintendo Switch is aimed at specific gamers

Nintendo has officially unveiled the all new model of Nintendo Switch - the OLED Switch - that will be launching on October 8 this year for $350. This has displeased quite a number fans who were longing for a more powerful and revised model, whose rumors had surfaced two years ago. Looks like they have to wait for a few more years until the Switch, launched back in 2017, reaches the end of its life cycle.

Anyway, in my opinion, this new model of the Switch is aimed at a certain niche of gamers. Are you one of them?

What's new?

  • The feature that really stands out is the use of OLED display, hence the name of the model. OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode and is one of best looking displays but also expensive at the same time. They produce colors that very visually appealing to the eyes and thus enhance the quality of the images displayed. Moreover, they also have good viewing angles and consume less power. OLED displays have been in use for quite some time now in smartphones, TVs and monitors. Do take a note, it's still only a 720p HD display.
  • The display size has also been increased from 6.2 inches to 7 inches with slightly thinner bezels. This provides an immersive experience for gamers playing in handheld mode.
  • As for storage is concerned, gamers will be delighted to know that will be able to download more games without having to buy an external microSD card as the internal storage now has 64GB of space (a little less in reality as some space is reserved for the system software).
  • Tabletop gamers can now stop complaining about the kickstand as a wider one is being used.
  • Online gamers can make the most of the ethernet connectivity port for fast and lag-free internet connection.
  • The white and black colour gives the Switch a more premium look, although you can buy coloured joy cons to make it look different.

What's not?

Everything else is the same. Nintendo has assured that there's no change in hardware, including the battery. You can expect almost the same performance and battery life when compared to the original Switch.
Yes, no 4K output in docked mode. All Nintendo accessories will work except maybe for the Nintendo LABO due to the larger size of the OLED Switch.

Is this new model for you?

Personally, I can see only two reasons to buy the OLED Switch - one, you're a video game console collector and two, you're more of a handheld console gamer or play the Switch in handheld mode for most of the time.
The first reason is self-explanatory. As for the second reason, due to the rich, colourful and bright OLED display and larger size handheld gamers will definetely and hugely benefit from this. The games will look better, attractive and vibrant.
There's no reason to buy the OLED model if you're a couch gamer and keep it docked most of the time, or you just find playing on the TV or monitor more comfortable since the cheaper original Switch does the same exact thing by delivering the same performance.

So what are your thoughts on the new OLED model? Do you like it? Do you find it as a good upgrade? If you own a Switch already, will you upgrade it?
